Cigarette smoking

What can it cause?

  • Hypertension –> damages both kidney and cause left ventricle heart failure
  • Atherosclerosis  –> heart attack or stroke or Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
  • increased cholesterol
  • Heart problems -> Myocardial infarct from the atherosclerosis & the hypertension
  • CANCER: lung, pancreas, trachea, mouth  (buccal carcinoma; which means you can’t get braces and smoke at same time bc the carcinogens enter thru cuts in the mouth if there’s any!), bladder (transitional cell carcinoma), kidneys, esophagus (squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus), etc  should be 12 types of cancer total!
  • secondary polycythemia with increased erythropoeisis
  • Buerger’s disease (Raynaud-like where fingers become necrosed from vasoconstriction of blood supply and ulcerate)

There are over 4,000 chemicals and ~60 cancer agents in cigarettes. But people are so addicted to them because they can’t set their mind to quitting. Also, once the atherosclerotic plaque blocks more than 75% of one’s coronary artery (that is the artery that supplies the heart), there is a risk of plaque rupture and MI.  It makes me realize when I was studying, when that time comes, who will be there to save that person? MI and ventricular fibrillation are causes of sudden cardiac death. The person who nonchalantly smokes almost a pack a day will not even realize they will not have time to say their “good byes”. If it is too late, they won’t even get a chance to make it to the hospital to be treated. The ambulance might not even make it in time. Not even a second chance at life compared to any other diseases and illnesses.

And to think there are some who smoke one  cigarette every hour on the dot! What are they trying to do? High disapproval head shake.
